Methven coast past the spirits

Coastal Spirits 0 V Methven FC 9

With much pressure on their shoulders going into this game, Methven certainly needed a result but as it turned out they gained much more. After 20 minutes of end to end action, the visitors finally got a grip on the match and from that point never looked back.

Gareth Saltmer kicked off the route with a determined, one man show, taking on anyone in sight and jinking his way into the box before gliding his shot past the keeper at his near post, 0-1. It wasn’t long before it was 2, when Methven were awarded a debatable penalty

after Josh Burrows and a defender collided and young winger was felled. Liam Hett took the responsibility from the spot and clinically dispatched home, 0-2. On came new signing and super sub, Nick Eden who in a 5 minute brace grabbed himself 2 quick fire goals, 0-4. Just before the interval Saltmer added the necessary seasoning to a fine move, striking his effort beyond the frustrated keeper and adding a second to his tally.

The second half started, and it wasn’t long until the hosts were feeling the strain of this well oiled and dominant Methven side, who showed no mercy with their relentless attacks. Thabs Khabu made it 0-6, pouncing on the end of a long ball, catching it on the half volley to give the keeper no chance.

Darcey Taylor and Diego Moreira grabbed their first goals of the season to make it 0-8.

Then came probably the highlight of the match as the mountaineers oozed class and total authority, passing the ball beautifully and shifting the play at their leisure, avoiding any interceptions, sending the crowd into rapture.

John ‘the Governor’ Peneycad joined the party late on and much like a bulldozer he charged down the defenders’ frantic clearance, before muscling his way past a second and then finally sliding his shot past the fast approaching keeper to make it a final score of 0-9.

One final shout out goes to James Wasley, who managed to bury his own demons of the past 2 weeks by maintaining a clean sheet and although he had a quiet game, he was still called upon in the dying moments; gloriously diverting a goal bound header over the bar.

Excuse the pun but this was most certainly a spirited performance from start to finish for the Mountaineers and with any luck this result will kick start their league campaign. Methven go again next week with their long awaited first home match of the season, when they host Universities Berocca Forwards, 2:30pm kick off at Methven Domain.

Hometown Blues

Methven Reserves 2 V Halswell United Globetrotters 6

The excitement of hosting their first home match of the season couldn’t be married with a good result as Halswell ran out deserved winners in a sad day for Methven’s second senior team. Goals from Juan Fissore and Wes Torres were not enough to overcome the tough opposition and this will be moment in their season that they will quickly look to move on from. The reserves next match is next Saturday 4th May, against Oxford FC at Pearsons Park.

A goal fest

Methven 14th Grade 6 V Ferrymead Bays 14 Blue 9

The youngsters endured a dreadful first half, going down 1-6; however, with their backs against the wall and with no regard for damage limitation, they took the game by the scruff of the neck and almost pulled off the comeback of the century.

At one point they managed to recover the score to 6-7 but unfortunately, they ran out of steam and succumbed to a 6-9 defeat. Despite the loss there were plenty of positives to take away, most notably their fighting spirit.
