Methven FC 9 v Burwood FC 0
Methven were simply irresistible from the off. Relentless wave after wave of attacks on the Burwood goal and in no time at all they were 1-0 up through Liam Hett, pouncing on a keeper parry from their first corner of the match. The mountaineers could smell blood and they were thirsty for my goals. A superb flighted through ball from Saltmer was met on the volley by Torres to make it 2-0. Hett made it 3-0 and grabbed his second, curtesy of Luccini’s quick thinking, long throw. Already sick of chasing shadows, Burwood reluctantly continued to get stretched at the back. Josh Burrows was in no mood to give them a break and the pacey winger left the defence for dead before finishing his effort across the keeper 4-0. He soon turned provider; with a cut back to Luccini to sweetly caress the ball to the bottom corner, 5-0 and half time.
Juan Stimolo came on for the bloody nosed Luccini and went up top, making a nuisance of himself in the visitors backline. Saltmer swung a cross from the right with the keeper nowhere to be seen. Stimolo’s header didn’t have enough on it to penetrate the net but the luckless defender lashed a desperate leg to apply the necessary force to push the ball over the line, 6-0. Then came the pass of the game from Torres, enticing both the defender and keeper to commit, provoking Burrows to gracefully dink the ball over the stretched keeper, 7-0. The Burwood keeper had completely lost the plot by this point and was often frantically rushing from his goal, exposing himself on a number of occasions. Stimolo got his very own goal and Saltmer converted another free kick to make it 9-0. Up the other end our very own James Wasley buried his own demons from the last time these two teams met, ensuring a calm and commanding performance, thoroughly deserving his clean sheet.
Meanwhile in Christchurch the Methven reserves received another hiding from Ferrymead, losing 9-2.
Luckily on the other side of the district, the 14th grade came out on top in a thrilling 4-3 win over Christchurch Boys School Black.
Next week the Methven domain plays host to the reserves v FC Twenty 11 Army
