Easter Promise

Fc Twenty 11 1 V Methven Reserves 3

With so many players missing for the Easter break, the reserves had to field a makeshift team. Luckily the first teams’ game was called off so reinforcement could be brought in. The early exchanges were quite scrappy, but it was Methven who settled in well and began to cause problems for the hosts defence. A series of dangerous corners and good probing possession provided the necessary foothold to progress. Unfortunately, it was just the finishing that was lacking with half an hour played.
Then came the moment where Juan Fissore turned provider with a cushion pass into the path of John Peneycad, who had time to line his shot from 35 yards out. The effort was struck with ferocity, height and swerve to nestle in the top corner; the deadlock finally broken in style, 0-1.
The visitors didn’t stop there and now had the wind in their sails. Rory Lawn launched a curling cross into the box and this time Limbo backed himself to make the headed connection, sending the ball past to outstretched keeper, 0-2.
After the interval Methven continued where they left off; demonstrating complete control to impose themselves on proceedings. Many chances to extend their lead came and went, without threatening the target. Dom Wilson-Knight had the best chance as the keeper was wrong footed, however with the hard part done he skewed his effort wide of the empty net. Twenty seized on this good fortune and pulled one goal back when Cam Holmes was caught in no man’s land, having been the favourite to smother a through ball. The striker sweetly lifted the ball past him and into the net, 1-2. Before nerves could kick in, Methven killed the game off when the hosts keeper made his own error of judgement and didn’t react to a Through ball. Dylan Sheer accepted the invitation, pouncing on the loose ball and finishing well, 1-3. There the score remained until the final whistle and 3 back to back games on their travels with 6 points to show is certainly not to be sniffed at. The reserves will return to their home for next week’s match, when they take on Halswell United Globetrotters at Methven Domain; 2:30pm kick off.
Meanwhile in Division 3, Methven’s first team suffered further disruptions to the start of their season. Yet another game was called off at the 11th hour as Christchurch United dropped down to the 6th tier. The 14th grade also enjoyed the Easter break with a well deserved rest. Both sides will be back in action next weekend.
