Sisters Scissored as team don’t make the cut
Methven FC first team were due to take on Universities AFC Sisters on Saturday afternoon, however due to unforeseen circumstances the away side were unable to field a sufficient squad and as a result, reluctantly forfeited the game. Much to the disappointment of our lads who were relishing the chance to start their league campaign on the back of their ‘Methven Supervalue Cup’ triumph a couple of weeks back. Some may say it is bitter sweet, but the silver lining is they will record a 3-0 win as a result. As for the ‘Sisters’ deeper problems have arisen and there are now doubts whether their side will overcome their player shortage crises or remove their side from the league altogether. Methven on the other hand move onto next week when they take on Burwood AFC at Clare Park, Christchurch.

You Can Bank on our Reserves
Banks Peninsula 0 V Methven FC Reserves 6
Having already previously demolished Banks 13-2 in their own back garden, just 2 weeks prior, you would be easily forgiven for predicting a cricket score this time round, even more so as the Peninsula’s play on a cricket pitch ironically. Any plans of the hosts reaping revenge were quickly dealt a huge blow as newbie Fissore Stimolo made it 0-1 with only ten minutes played.
By the half hour mark it was 0-2, with Fissore Stimolo doubling his tally on the back of a fine one, two exchange with Burrows; before slotting home. Burrows himself was to be in the action just before halftime, getting on the end of a glorious through ball from King; despatching his effort into the top right corner and leaving the keeper bewildered, 0-3.
Midway through the second half, the Mountaineers continued their onslaught and through a series of fortunate events Dylan Sheer found his first attempt ricochet back to him and showing beautiful innovation, he volleyed his rebound beyond the despairing keeper to make it 0-4. No sooner had the Banks keeper kicked the ball up the pitch for the restart, he was picking it out of the net again, with Burrows grabbing his second of the afternoon, 0-5. However, the day would not be complete without the man and legend, Martin Dodson joining the party. Most people see him as the talisman of the reserve side and the real driving force for whatever their destiny holds this season. The experienced veteran had the simplest of tasks as a loose ball found its way to his feet, deep in the 18 yard box. Acting on his own predatory instincts, he put the ball and the indeed the game to bed, making it 0-6 final score.

Youngsters leap Leopards
Methven FC 14th 1 V Papanui-Redwood AFC Leopards 0

The early kick off on Saturday saw the newly formed Methven 14th grade host the Leopards. The overnight rain, prepared the pitch nicely, adding an extra zip to the surface and it certainly hadn’t dampened the spirits of the fans as the domain welcomed a well stacked turnout. The match kicked off with both teams feeling each other out but it was the Methven youngsters who settled quickest, allowing a show of confidence to shine through. In fact, the first half saw a very solid display at the back, whilst the midfield was being bossed; unfortunately the few chances created couldn’t be converted but Methven were definitely showing signs of superiority and were unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty as a seemingly blatant foul from the keeper went unpunished. The second half was very much a repeat of the first, only this time the Leopards were looking threatening from the counter attack. Still chances were being squandered up the top, but there was still the notion that a goal was coming. With time running out, star striker Patrick added the deft touch to a scrappy build up, notching the ball home off the post, 1-0. There the score remained until the final whistle. A big shout out goes to Tyler for a colossus performance in central defence. His calm head and reading of the game was a cut above; more so in particular a last ditch tackle to prevent a near certain equaliser for the travellers.
