Methven Triumph on own turf
Methven supervalue Cup
Day 1:
What a fantastic sight to see so many players and supporters attending our inaugural Supervalue Cup on our very own turf.
Proceedings commenced with a well observed minute silence for the victims in Christchurch.
The methven seniors first game was against Geraldine Black. The 9am kick off didn’t have much of an effect as our boys put on a fine display, controlling the match and running out 4-0 winners. Their second match was to be the real test, as they pitched against FC Twenty 11 Fizzers, a division one side. Despite a gallant effort the match ended 4-1 to the travellers but there were plenty of positives to take away non the less.
The Fizzers were far too proficient with their well worked set piece routines, however the mountaineers proved to be more than a match for them despite what the scoreline may indicate.
Their last group game saw the seniors take on Banks Peninsula and as the sun came out, fatigue set in; bringing about a pedestrian paced affair. Methven got the job done with a 4-1 victory but the performance was nothing to write home about, compelled by the weaker opposition.
Methvens Reserves opening match was against Geraldine Red. Unfortunately they didn’t get off to the best start and succumbed to a 4-1 loss.
Their second appearance came against
Fc Twenty Mavericks and again they struggled. The division 2 side proved to be too much for the reserves and it ended 8-0.
The final group game was against Hornby Utd Reserves. This time they displayed great team work and despite a courageous performance they were beaten but the smallest of margins, losing 1-0.
Day 2
The methven reserve side woke up fresh for the 9am kick off and put to bed any notion that they were simply in the tournament to make up the numbers; putting in a fine display with a 13-3 win over their arch rivals Banks Peninsula.
Stand out performances came from Jan Piotrowski for his tireless work in midfield and Dylan Sheehan for scoring 5 goals.
An hour later the first team took to the pitch for their semi final and were simply irresistible, destroying FC Twenty Mavericks 4-1. The Mountaineers controlled the match from start to finish and a notable mention goes out to Saltmer for a exquisite solo run, which concluded with a cheeky finish to make the score 2-0 at the time.
Show time
The final: Methven First team v Geraldine Red
Methven began with the kick off; and using their special set piece, Luccini launched the ball to the far right wing where it was met by Tummehang to deliver into the box. Angus rose up highest to smash home his header into the net, 1-0 with 16 seconds on the clock.
The Mountaineers then dug in to deny Geraldine any space or time on the ball as every player worked his socks off to keep a foothold on the remainder of the encounter. Discipline to hold the formation and heroics to grind out the result we’re Methven’s secret formula to pull this one over the line.
The hosts of the first ever Methven Supervalue Cup were victorious and they did their small town proud yet again. A special mention goes out to Josh Burrows, who unfortunately missed the final but the youngster was a prominent figure for getting his side to the final, most notably sealing a hat trick in the prior match.
Everyone at Methven Football Club would like to thank all the players, coaches, volunteers and spectators who came and took part in our event. Special mention to our long list of sponsors: Supervalue, Crossroads, Drycreek meats, Coca Cola, Goalkeeping New Zealand, Discovering Jet, Thai Chilli, Dom’s, Cinema Paradiso, Primo, Newzengland Ltd and Rollin Pedaler as without them we wouldn’t have been able to put on such an event.
We hope to see you all again on 6th April at the Methven Domain, when the Methven seniors first team take on Universities AFC Sisters at 2:30pm, as we commence our league campaign for this season.
