Methven reserves 1 V Oxford 5
This was debatably the reserves biggest game to date. The mountaineers are yet to register a point this season and they were up against the early title contenders.
With the game in its infancy the visitors took an early lead when a cross come shot, wickedly spun underneath the despairing Cam Holmes, 0-1. The home side then turned it up a notch and started making attacks of their own. Yet with the match very much a scrappy affair, the ball was mainly played in the middle of the park with neither team really taking control. Methven began to gain confidence from some probing attacks and it wasn't long before they were back on level terms with a ferocious drive from Hamish Dewhurst, 1-1.
The second half kicked off in much the same vein with chances either side but still very much scrappy. It was on a knife edge for long periods with the next scorer likely to take all 3 points. Methven's chance of the game came and went when Henry Dewhurst was put through on goal with the keeper rushing off his line and caught in no mans land. However his attempt was rushed and put wide when maybe he had more time than he thought.
Unfortunately the home sides midfield tired with 15 minutes to go and they were under huge pressure to resist the frequent attacks. Cam Holmes kept them in it with 3 fine saves but wasn't able to keep out a late free kick, which nestled in the side of the net, 1-2. With their heads down after such a valiant effort there was to be more pain added to the scoreline. The home side were unable to prevent a quick fire series of attacks and 3 more goals were scored, leaving the final score 1-5, not a true reflection of the game when a draw would have been a fairer result. Man of the match went to Jan Piotrowski for his heroics at the back and there are still plenty of positives to take moving forward.
In other results, the Methven 15th grade team got there season going with a 6-4 win at home.
