Keeping the momentum up

Methven 5 V Universities Berocca Forwards 1

At last the day had come when Methven first team would play their initial home fixture of the league season. There were a few changes to the Methven line up, losing both Gareth Saltmer and John Peneycad to the European cup of nations for a month. But the one plus, they did have Jan Luccini making his first appearance of the season after a lengthy injury spell, all be it before he joins the other two a week later.
The early exchanges were end to end as they often are but new boy Nicholas Eden finally broke the deadlock after a searing run from the wing, executing his shot from an extremely tight angle and finishing top rocker, 1-0.
The visitors responded and got one of their players on the scoresheet; unfortunately for him it was at the wrong end; connecting with his head to a classic Luccini swing genie corner, 2-0.
Before the interval the hosts added another from the spot. Liam Hett pulled rank by taking the honors but gratefully converted , 3-0.
The Berocca’s must have had some stern words at half time and came out all guns blazing; rightfully getting on the scoresheet in the process with a wonder strike from distance, giving keeper Wasley the only duty of picking it out the net, 3-1.
Enter Thabs Khabu, who had trained well midweek; beating the offside trap, then a defender and finally the keeper before poking home to make it 4-1.
The mountaineers ended the game with five when another penalty was awarded; this time Luccini grabbed the ball and fended off any suitors before grabbing his first goal of the season and a final score of 5-1. The Berocca’s are certainly going to need to use their own product to regroup after this clash. Methven will have the daunting task next week when they take on the undefeated Selwyn United FC at Foster Park.
Back to back defeats

Oxford 3 V Methven Reserves 0

The Reserves went into this match looking for a response to their last defeat but alas it wasn’t to be. Due to injuries and players ineligible, they were only able to field 11 and just one sub. This paid its toll in the latter stages as the hosts were able to energize proceedings with their countless substitutions and in the process ran out 3-0 winners.
The Reserves will return home to take on Universities AFC Burgundy Beavers at Methven Domain next Saturday, 2:30 kick off.
