Dominant Methven exorcise Spirits
Methven 9 V Christchurch Coastal Spirits 0

This was a game with the potential to be a banana skin, but high riding Methven were not inclined to slip up. Rather they were off to a flyer, with a stroked pass across the six yard box to the waiting Luccini. His shot was shanked but had enough direction on it to nestle the ball in the bottom corner, 1-0.
Now with any nerves settled, Methven were able to play their breath taking football with all members getting involved, leaving the large crowd salivating at the delicious feast of slick football as the home team obtained their just deserts and doubled their lead, when Luccini returned the favour to Torres, putting him through, leaving the midfielder with a simple pass into the goal, 2-0.
A quick fire third came when leading scorer Angus skillfully ghosted his way through the Spirits defence, beating two defenders before slotting his effort to the keepers right, 3-0. Angus popped up almost immediately afterwards with his second and another assist from Torres as they went into the break with a 4-0 buffer.
The second half commenced and failed to bring any relief to Coastal as Methven began where they left off making the ball do the work, passing beautifully, enjoying the conditions, happy to be playing on a better pitch than last week and leaving the Spirits, by now, completely spooked. Torres made it 5-0 with the pick of the bunch waiting patiently as the ball hung in the air and as it dropped he sweetly struck it on the volley, giving the keeper no chance as it flew past him into the net. It wouldn’t be a proper thrashing without a goal from Hugo Smith. He decided to join the party on the hour mark, slyly tip toeing into the box to await the cross from Khabu, which was met by the head of Smith, sending the ball back in the direction it came, wrong footing the goalkeeper, 6-0. Chandra then got his second of the season in much the same vein as his first, tapping into an empty net at the back post, after Khabu had instinctively let the ball trickle through his legs, 7-0. Khabu replaced Angus upfront and got himself on the scoresheet, beating the offside trap and then the approaching keeper, after a superb through ball from Smith, 8-0.
Methven were rampant and in particular, John ‘the Governor’ Peneycad lived up to his reputation and played a blinder, hell bent on getting his first goal of the season. In the twilight of the game he was to reap the rewards of a fine performance, adding the cherry to the top of the 8-tier cake; unleashing a powerful drive into the bottom corner off a loose ball in the box. This was to be the last kick of the game in a 9-0 master class from the mountaineers.
Methven go again next Saturday 9thJune, against Western AFC Generals at Own Mitchell park, 2:30pm kick off.
